Melanie Hauser's sequel to CONFESSIONS OF A SUPER MOM is SUPER MOM SAVES THE WORLD. I've told Melanie I already think she's Super Mom simply to be able to finish another novel and get it out so quickly when I'm still barely halfway thru my first draft of my second. She confessed that she's actually finished three already and is 50 pages into another. Do we actually need any more evidence that the woman has magical powers?
One of the things I so enjoyed about CONFESSIONS was its combination of wacky magical happenings set in a very realistic socio-economic setting. The main character, Birdie, works in a grocery store and her ex-husband is unapologetic about having saddled her with the responsiblity for the happiness of her two kids while giving her an abundance of s__*%__t and almost no financial support. Sound familiar to all those women stranded in the working class by marriages that didn't work out?
Despite her troubles, Birdie is a spirited and resiliant heroine, and unlike Uma Thurman's character, she's not a nut-case bent on revenge. She's just trying to raise kids, keep house, solve a few mysteries and catch a few bad guys along the way. Best of all, she's not having the holier-than-thou Little League parents tell her how to be a good mom.
I interviewed Melanie this week, just as her sequel was released in stores. Congratulations, Mel!
